Water
Because we use water to make our products, maintaining the highest quality standards for consumers means using the best water possible. At the same time, it is essential that we treat water as the limited resource that it is. We are committed to optimizing our global water use through greater efficiency, innovative processes and new technologies.
Our Goals & Commitments
- Improve our water use efficiency by 20 percent per unit of production by 2015
- Strive for positive water balance in our operations in water-distressed areas
- Provide access to safe water to 3 million people in developing countries by the end of 2015
Across all our markets in the European region, we are continually looking for ways to improve water usage:
- In the U.K., Walkers has reduced water usage in its largest potato chip facility by 42% since 2001
- Additionally the UK business has pledged to reduce water use at British manufacturing sites by a further 45% per kg of production within 3 years
- In 2009 the business reduced consumption by 14.6%, so we are well on our way to achieving this target
- In Belgium, our plant investments have led to water savings of over 30% relative to 2006 figures
- In 2010 PepsiCo brand Marbo opened a €4 million wastewater treatment facility at its plant in Backi Maglic, Serbia
- In the last three years PepsiCo Foods Iberia has reduced the consumption of water by 20%
